Raw vs Polished Baltic Amber Necklaces: Which One Should You Choose?

Baltic amber necklaces have become increasingly popular in recent years, especially as a natural remedy for teething babies. But with so many options available, it can be difficult to decide which type of amber necklace to choose. In this blog post, we’ll explore the differences between raw and polished Baltic amber necklaces to help you make an informed decision.

Unprocessed amber can be uncomfortable against the skin, especially for those with sensitive skin.  Hence, while all of our Ecopiggy Baltic amber necklaces are made from amber that has been extracted directly from the Baltic Sea, all natural stone has been polished to some degree—raw and polished.

Raw vs Polished Baltic Amber Necklaces

Raw Baltic Amber Necklaces

Raw amber is minimally processed; raw amber often has a rougher texture and uneven surface. Raw amber necklaces tend to have a more natural, rustic look that some people find appealing.  It is believed that raw amber has a higher concentration of succinic acid, the natural pain-relieving compound found in amber.

Polished Baltic Amber Necklaces

Polished Baltic amber necklaces are made from raw amber that has been polished to create a smooth, shiny surface. The polishing process involves removing the outer layer of rough amber to reveal the smoother, more colorful layer beneath. This results in a more uniform and, for some, aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Succinic Acid

"Succinic acid is an antimicrobial compound derived from amber or sugar cane, but it is also naturally found in plant and animal tissues," explains Gretchen Frieling, MD, a triple board-certified dermatopathologist in the Boston area.

With regards to the concentration levels of succinic acid in Baltic Amber teething necklaces, there are two different directions of belief. For some, the polishing process used to create shiny amber beads is believed to remove the layer of amber that has higher concentrations of succinic acid--therefore, lowering the effectiveness of reduction of inflammation.  On the other side of the fence, some people believe that the polishing process can enhance the healing properties of the amber by making it more effective at releasing succinic acid.

While there are no specific scientific studies to confirm either side of the discussion, Succinic Acid (also called Amber Acid) has been used as a natural antibiotic and general curative for centuries.

Conclusion

Ultimately, the choice between raw and polished Baltic amber necklaces comes down to personal preference. If you prefer a more natural, rustic look and don’t mind the more raw texture, a raw amber necklace may be the right choice for you. However, if you prefer a smoother, more uniform appearance, a polished amber necklace may be a better option. Regardless of which type of necklace you choose, it’s important to purchase from a reputable brand, like Ecopiggy, and ensure that the necklace is made from certified Baltic amber.

Ecopiggy 100% certified Baltic amber necklaces are beautiful, and handmade.  Our Baltic amber necklaces are soothing, safe, and effective and lab tested for safety.
